What we store
- Newsletter subscribers. The email address you enter, whether you asked from the site, the footer or the end of a story, the topics you selected and the date you subscribed. Used to send the newsletter and nothing else.
- Reader accounts. If you sign in, we store the email address the login provider gives us, plus the profile you build here: display name, handle, bio, avatar, karma, and counts of your comments, reactions and posts.
- Your contributions. Comments, replies, posts, reactions, follows and reports are stored with the account that made them, along with timestamps and an edited flag if you change a comment.
- Story reads. A count of views per story. We do not store a reading history linked to your account.
- Tips and correction requests. What you write, the optional name and email you give, and the date. Read by the desk only.
What we do not store
- No advertising identifiers, no third-party marketing pixels, no cross-site tracking.
- No location data beyond what a standard server request carries when serving a page.
- No payment details — there is nothing to pay for on this site.
Cookies we set
- Session cookie (
app_session) — keeps you signed in. Set only when you sign in. Removed when you sign out. - View de-duplication cookie — a small per-story flag so a page refresh does not inflate the read count. Session-scoped.
- Theme preference — stored in your browser, not on our servers, so the site opens in the same light or dark mode you chose.
Your browser also stores a per-story marker locally so the view counter stays honest within a single visit. It is not readable by anyone but this site.
Who processes it
The site and its database run on Teable. Stories originate from the Apex Wire feed, which supplies the published reporting we rewrite and credit. Login is handled by Teable's app authentication. Our email is delivered through the platform's sending service. We do not pass your identity to those providers beyond what is technically required to serve the page, send the email or authenticate you.
How long we keep it
Newsletter records stay until you unsubscribe. Account data and contributions stay until you delete them or ask us to delete your account. Tips and correction requests are kept while open and for a short period afterwards so we can answer follow-ups. Server logs are short-lived.
Your control
- Every comment and post you make can be edited or deleted by you, from the comment or post itself.
- You can change your display name, bio and avatar at any time from your profile.
- Unsubscribing from the newsletter takes effect immediately.
- To delete your account and its contributions entirely, write through the contact page from the address on the account. We will confirm when it is done.
Children
This site is written for a general audience and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.
Security
Access to the newsroom console and to stored reader data is limited to readers with editorial roles, and all Teable credentials used by the site are held server-side. Nothing sensitive is exposed to the browser. No system is perfect; if you find a security problem, tell us before telling anyone else.
Changes
If this note changes materially we will update this page and note the date in the site footer. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated note.
